Chapter # 5 REGIONAL - METRO OPTICAL NETWORKS
نویسنده
چکیده
Regional and metropolitan networks are undergoing rapid transformations, propelled by shifting bandwidth and market paradigms. These evolutions have revealed some serious limitations with legacy SONET/SDH infrastructures and opened up many new avenues for the application of new, maturing optical technologies. This chapter presents a critical look at some of the major evolutions and challenges shaping this vital networking space.

RINGOSTAR – An Evolutionary Performance Upgrade of Optical Ring Networks
INTERNET traffic volumes are growing and require the transmission capacity of the underlying infrastructure to be continuously extended. A closer look at this infrastructure reveals that the Internet architecturally relies on a three level hierarchy consisting of backbone networks, metropolitan area networks, and local access networks. The national or international backbone networks will provid...
متن کاملIntroducing Digital Optical Networks
Infinera has introduced a new transport network architecture, the Digital Optical Network, that leverages fundamental advances in both large-scale photonic integration and optical system architecture to create a disruptive shift in network architecture and economics. A Digital Optical Network enables carriers to deploy an optical service platform into metro, regional and long haul core transpor...
متن کاملThe Energy Intensity of the Internet: Home and Access Networks
Estimates of the energy intensity of the Internet diverge by several orders of magnitude. We present existing assessments and identify diverging definitions of the system boundary as the main reason for this large spread. The decision of whether or not to include end devices influences the result by 1-2 orders of magnitude. If end devices are excluded, customer premises equipment (CPE) and acce...
متن کاملAccess Protocols for Optical burst-Switched Ring Networks
In this paper, we consider a WDM metro ring architecture with optical burst switching. Several access protocols are proposed and their performance is analyzed by simulation. 2002 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.
متن کاملDesigning Resilient Long-Reach Passive Optical Networks
We report on an emerging application focused on the design of resilient long reach passive optical networks using combinatorial optimisation techniques. The objective of the application is to determine the optimal position and capacity of a set of metro nodes. We specifically consider dual parented networks whereby each customer must be associated with two metro nodes. An important property of ...
